The 'YouTube Blindhuhn' Playlist

Preamble/Manifesto

I enjoy using YouTube, despite the endless list of misgivings I have with the platform. One thing YouTube's algorithm (again, love it or hate it) does extremely well is reccomend amazing, and often really obscure, music. Take a few suggestions, and soon enough your feed is ripe with everything from a Spanish New Wave album from 1984 to some 8-minute-long experimental sound that pushes what even counts as music.

I created this playlist to flashbang listeners with this wide array of ideas and sound cultures. My idea was to make a playlist that had a little bit of something for every taste. We've got music EVERYONE is listening to. We've got music NO ONE is listening to. You will often be surprised by which is which.

The playlist is created by clicking on the unusual and interesting album reccomendations that appear in my YouTube feed. I then add either my favourite song from that album (ideally) or the best song I can find from that artist. In the worst-case (but unfortunately not uncommon) scenario, that artist's presence is completely absent from Spotify. Thus, there exists only the aching wound of incompetion where their beautiful music should be.

If you were to listen to this entire playlist from top to bottom, you would innevitably encounter a set number of things:

  • A new song in a genre you already love
  • A new genre you love but didn't previously know about
  • A sound unlike anything you have ever heard before

When you're ready, hit shuffle and hop in. If you would like to follow the development of the playlist, feel free to give it a like. I'm always updating it with new music.
